We are a private non-profit substance abuse treatmentorganization located in downtown Salt Lake City. The Admissions Coordinator must haveexcellent customer service skills, a positive ‘can do’ attitude, and bededicated to our clients and mission. The hours are 9-5 Monday through Friday,but can be flexible for the right candidate. Duties include providing generalsupport to the Admissions team, greeting new clients, answering phones, lightdata entry, and orienting new clients on our programs. StudentCouncil

We would love to have SLCC students come to our school toorganize and run a Student Council. The SLCC students would mentor our 5^thand 6^th grade students.

The student council helps share students’ ideas, interests,and concerns with teachers and school principals. A Student Council is arepresentative structure for students, through which they can become involvedin the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management,staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. Inelementary schools, there are typically one or two student representatives perclassroom and one presiding set of officers. An example of the structureof an elementary student council may include a president, a vice president,secretary, treasurer, sergeant of legs, fundraising officer and historian.These roles may be assigned or voted on, either within the student council orby the entire student body.

School Supply/RewardDrive

As part of our school wide behavior program our studentshave the opportunity to earn Panda Paws. Panda Paws are like money thatthey can use to buy items from our school store. Our students receivePanda Paws for having good behavior, being prepared for class, being on task,increasing their behavior if they have struggled, following school rules, beingcourteous and kind, or anything else that a teacher deems worthy of a reward. Children get called to the school store once a month and then have thechance to spend their paws if they want, or continue saving. By callingstudents once a month, we have about 150 students a week coming to our store. We are looking for SLCC students to help collect NEW itemsfor our store that our children can earn with their panda paws. We arelooking for items such as backpacks, art supplies, toys, games, stuffedanimals, notebooks, pencils, books, musical items, sports equipment, craftsets, and anything else you think a child 5yrs old-12yrs old might enjoy as aprize that is appropriate at school.

Broadcasting/Journalism

We would love to have a school news paper and a school newsbroadcast on the internet. Two of our 3^rd grade classes andall of our 4^th-6^th grade classes have a lot of technologyalready in their classroom that we would like to utilize more. Thoseclasses have one computer for every two students in the class to share. We also have cameras, video cameras, flip video cameras, and other technologyavailable. Through the supervision and direction of SLCC students ourstudents will be able to create a school news paper and a news broadcast everyweek. Through this type of communication our school climate will increaseand it will help build the community in the building.

Science Fair

Unfortunately, science is frequently one of the first thingscut from the curriculum when a teacher doesn’t have enough time in the day toteach all the subjects. A strong science background is necessary forsuccess in secondary education, college, and many careers. If ourstudents are not receiving this foundation in elementary, they will have aharder time catching up in their later years. We would love SLCC students cometo our school and teach our students about science, hopefully doing experimentswith them that would enrich their education. They could do this through ascience club that meets once or twice a week before, during, or afterschool. As a culminating project we would love to hold a science fair forany of our students who are interested in participating and sharing theirnewfound knowledge. To do this, we would need the assistance of SLCCstudents to organize, mentor, and direct our students through theirprojects.

Music/Art/Theater

Through a partnership with SLCC students we would love tohold more enrichment classes with our students. Some of our ideas ofthings we would like them to teach include the history and background of music,art, and theater. They could teach about specific artists, musicians, artperiods, musical periods, architecture throughout the world, and how theaterhas evolved through the years. They can also teach our students musicthrough songs, rhythm, music theory, etc. We would love to have ourstudents perform plays after learning the basics of acting/theater like voiceprojection, upstage/downstage/stage left/stage right, etc. Theater andmusic are wonderful ways to help our students who are learning English. Music and theater give them situations that are safe and structured to practicetheir English. This would be very impactful at our school as about 75% ofour students come from homes that speak a language other than English.

Community Outreach

Ourschool is located in the middle of a very diverse community that struggleseconomically. We would like to give back to our neighbors and communityby coordinating beatification of neighborhoods. We would love to haveSLCC students lead our students, parents, and teachers in becoming moreinvolved in our community. We could take a school day where all of ourstudents went out into the community to plant flowers, clean up yards,etc. This would help our community know that although we come from differentcultures we can bond together and help each other working towards onegoal. There are many directions we can take this and we are excited aboutthe ideas the SLCC students might have in developing community outreach.

New Community Partner: Choice Humanitarian

Choice Humanitarian is a Salt Lake City based NGO that fights poverty in Kenya, Nepal, Bolivia, Guatemala and Mexico. Choice is approaching its 30 year anniversary.

There is just too much about Choice for me to cover in a blog post, but here are some bullets about Choice beliefs:

All people and communities have the right to become self-reliant and self-developing
Women and girls must be equal citizens
Access to sufficient clean drinking water, education, health care, nutritious food, and economic opportunity is fundamental to self-reliance and self-development
Rich or poor, we all have something of value to contribute culturally, socially, economically and environmentally

My meeting with Leslie at LSSU just so happened to overlap with their 'Manna Market' which is their food donation program. There was a sense of organized chaos as the few (of the hundreds served that day) picked up their food, and helped clean up.

New Community Partner: Tree Utah

20 Years – 330,000 Trees – 100,000 Volunteers
Working together to make Utah a greener place - one tree at a time.

With a motto like that, it would be difficult to not want to get involved. Its also the shortest, sweetest description of TreeUtah I could possibly share.

TreeUtah has several ecological restoration sites as well as community tree plantings.

They have an education program focused on 2nd graders in Salt Lake County, as well as workshops, summer camps, and Girl Scout programs.

Did I mention they have a 8 foot tall tree mascot named Carrie Cottonwood??? Who hasn't wanted to be a tree at some point in their life?

We talked about planning an SLCC planting some time in the spring or early summer. I'm looking forward to a good reason to get out in the canyons and show Mother Nature some love.

New Community Partner: The Children's Center

I had the privilege of meeting with Penney at the Children's Center last week. While they technically aren't a "new" community partner (SLCC students have been volunteering here for years,) it is my first chance to formally introduce the organization as our partner.

Just walking in to the building I had a good feeling. The historic building (formally an elementary school) has been modernized and has a clean, safe feel. There is a massive art sculpture in the middle of the common space with all kinds of working mechanisms to move a ball around a track. I probably could have spent an hour or so watching it.

During the tour I got to see the Therapeutic Preschool in action. These are children that for one reason or another are struggling in normal school, but you couldn't tell from watching. Very low ratios keep the individual attention high. If you enjoy working with kids, this is the place for you.

New Community Partner: Utah Arts Festival

We are all familiar with the awesomeness that is the Utah Arts Festival. Every summer we get an overdose of music, visual art, dancing, theater, culinary arts. That list goes on. If its art, its there.

But did you know that it takes over 1,000 volunteers to make the festival happen? Everything from building, greeting, pouring drinks, painting faces, watching art booths (yeah, you get to hang in the arts booth while they take a break). Again, if you can think of it, they probably need a volunteer for it.

New Community Partner: spyhop productions

Spy Hop Productions is one of those organizations I have heard about for a while. Their name comes up at different times, I hear about something cool they are working on. I had no idea until my meeting last week just how cool they are...

"Spy Hop Productions is a nonprofit youth media arts and educational enrichment center located in the historic Art Space district of downtown Salt Lake City. Our purpose is to empower youth to express their voice and with it create a positive change in their lives, their community, and the world. Our mission is to encourage free expression, self-discovery, critical thinking and skilled participation via the big screen, the airwaves, and the web.

In an effort to achieve this, Spy Hop has established the following fundamental programmatic goals.

Provide high-quality, safe out-of-school-time programming for K-12 youth.
Foster personal and artistic expression through the use of emerging digital technologies and the media arts.
Develop 21^st century educational and workplace readiness skills.
Promote positive youth development and social emotional competencies.
Increase media literacy, personal awareness and community and global connections."

Last year, Spy Hop worked with over 550 youth. In their Core Student Evalation Stats, 99% of students would RECCOMEND SPY HOP TO A FRIEND. 99% of over 550!?!

They really do too much for me to list in one blog.. But I do have to highlight the Sending Messages Program: "Born out of Spy Hop’s mission of giving a voice to all local youth, Sending Messages reaches a population that rarely has that opportunity. Beginning in 2010, students at a secure care youth corrections facility in Salt Lake City were given recording and editing equipment to create their own radio show. Each month, they write, perform, record and produce personal narratives, poetry, short fiction, spoken word, and interviews that are then compiled into podcasts."

That is just awesome. Youth in facilities need outlets. SpyHop is giving them a voice.

New Community Partner: DesignBuildBLUFF

DesignBuildBLUFF is a non-profit organization that builds environmentally sustainable homes in the Navajo Nation. Our work introduces first-year graduate students in architecture to the culture and history of Utah’s desert southeast, where they design, and ultimately build a home for a Navajo Family.

My meeting with DesignBuildBLUFF last week left me inspired on so many levels. First of all, what they are doing is AWESOME. Watch this video and tell me you aren't inspired. Seriously, its only twelve minutes. You waste way more than that on Facebook. It makes me want to build a better world. Their mission is meaningful, and necessary. It's currently our only community partner that has something to offer students in Career and Technical Education. I'm looking forward to starting that conversation and getting some of our students involved.

New Community Partner: Odyssey House

Right before Christmas break, I had the privilege of meeting with the Odyssey House in downtown SLC. Donna Ruller, the Office Manager, has a long resume of volunteerism and is in the process of starting the Odyssey House's volunteer program. This means as an early volunteer you would not only have the opportunity to gain some valuable experience in substance abuse and mental health services, you would have the chance to help shape this new volunteer program.

I took a tour of the Adolescent Residential Treatment program and I was very moved. The tour and program description was given by a young man about to graduate from the program. It was very clear by the sincerity of his delivery that he believed in the program, and that it has made positive impacts on his life. He also planned to do some voluntary work after graduating with the program, because he was enjoying the time he spent and saw it beneficial towards his future. Having worked in the adolescent mental health field for several years, I can tell you to this speaks volumes about the program. Generally, even youth that saw programs as good want to leave and make distance as soon as they can.

There are some obvious connections to the Odyssey House and social work. However, I want to stress that you could use anything that you are passionate about to turn in to a volunteer opportunity with the Odyssey House. You could do a training module or group on nearly any topic. It would give you a chance to practice public speaking and group interaction, which are valuable skills in nearly any field.

Field Trip Leader

Responsibilities:

Assist with or lead field trips for K-12 students
Winter field trips run Jan.-Feb. and include snowshoeing
Fall and Spring field trips run Oct.-Nov. and April-June, respectively and include wetland explorations
Help with set-up and clean-up of field trips

Time Commitment:

Field trips are conducted in 2-2.5 hour blocks during school hours from October – June. Total time required per trip may equal 4 hours after set-up and clean-up are completed.
We prefer you assist with or lead at least three field trips per month. You can choose if you wish to help with fall, winter, or spring trips…or all three!

Training:

Training will be held at the beginning of the fall, winter, and spring seasons and will last approximately 3-4 hours.
Additional training will be offered throughout the year to provide you with updated and new information you may use during trips.

Requirements and Experience Necessary:

No experience necessary! You will be provided with all the training you need.
No criminal record. Background checks will be completed and references will be checked.
Good communication skills as well as experience with youth, education, or environmental topics a plus.
Must be reliable and able to tolerate extreme cold and/or hot weather depending on time of year you are helping with field trips. Must not mind getting wet or dirty.

Bowl, Make a difference

What is Bowl for Kids’ Sake (BFKS)?
BFKS is Big Brothers Big Sisters largest fundraiser. It is a bowling
event with the goal of raising $150,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Utah. Thanks to corporate sponsorships, 100% of the donations will
be used to create and support quality matches between caring adults
and children in Utah. Bowl For Kids’ Sake, 2012 for Salt Lake County
will be held at AMF Classic Lanes, 2265 South State Street, Salt Lake
City, UT 84115, on Febuary 25, 2012, sessions from 10am-11:30am,
12:00pm-1:30pm, 2:00pm-3:30pm.

How does it work?
Companies and individuals put teams together for BFKS. Each bowler
(5 per team) signs up at least $100 in online sponsorships from
friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers, etc. The free bowling takes
place as a final celebration with food, fun and prizes. Sponsorships
for the event are also available.

Who can participate and who do I contact to
participate?

What is a team captain and how do I create a team
online?
He or she is the leader of their team. This person has recruited 4
people to bowl and is responsible for forming the team, determining

Everyone with $100 or more in donations gets a free t-shirt. As an
incentive to join a team and raise funds for BFKS, prizes are awarded
based on funds raised. So the more donations a participant collects,
the better the prize!

How do I get my team or company name on the back
of the 2011 BFKS t-shirt?
As an incentive to join a team and raise funds for BFKS, each team,
business or organization that raises, donates or provides gift certificates
worth $1000 or more will have their team name, or
company/organization name placed on the back of our 2012 BFKS
t-shirt. Team online registration or email donation verification must
be completed by Febuary 15, 2012 for t-shirt production deadlines.

Why do bowlers need to get $100 in sponsors?
It costs about $800 per year to support a quality match by BBBS. For
every team and a half that raise $500, or $100 per bowler, a child in
the BBBS program can be matched with a caring adult. After all . . . it’s
not about the bowling, it’s about raising money to support our
children...our future.

What if I can raise $500 without a team and I’m not
interested in bowling? Or I just want to help raise
funds for BBBS?
We have several individual participants who raise $500 by signing up
online as a one person team and then they send out BFKS emails
nationwide to all of their friends, family and co-workers. Just go to

When Big Brothers Big Sisters reaches the $150,000
goal, what will the funds be spent on?
Our cost to create and support a quality match between a volunteer
(Big) and a child (Little) is about $800 per year. The funds will

think about it, 1,600 children will be seeing the world in a whole new
way because they have a Big Brother or Big Sister while they are
growing up

A Fond Farewell

Dear Supporters and Friends:

After hearing from many of you after we broke the news that the Community Food Co-op will be closing, we wanted to clarify a few things and give some additional information.

The Community Food Co-op will be ceasing operations after January. The Co-op has been distributing food now for six wonderful years. We have had many successes, including supporting local food producers and bringing low-cost, high-quality food to thousands of people in the region. We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received. We could not have managed this long without the dedication and enthusiasm of our members and volunteers.

We have happily worked side by side with all of you to see friendships built, communities strengthened, and of course families fed.

We are very proud of our accomplishments and have done everything in our power to make the Co-op viable. Despite our efforts, the project was not self-sustaining and we were relying on subsidies from our parent organization. This situation couldn’t continue.

This decision was not easy. Everyone involved loves the project and desperately wanted to keep it going. However, after months of trying to figure a way to save the Co-op, the terrible truth had to be faced: the losses we were sustaining would begin to threaten the core mission of our parent organization.

What now?

We will continue operations through January 2012.
We will hold our monthly distribution as scheduled on January 21, 2012.
We will continue to hold the market sales on January 9^th, 16^th and 23^rd.
On January 24^th-26^th, we will clearance any remaining inventory we have.
Finally, we plan to hold an open house and volunteer recognition event Wednesday, February 1^stto celebrate the successes of the project and the many people who have made this possible.
We will publish one last Harvester Newsletter celebrating the accomplishments of the Co-op. We plan to include a resource list to help you find the savings you need and the products you have come to love.

The purpose of the Utah Campus Compact Statewide Recognition Event is to recognize the work of outstanding faculty, staff, students, and community partners at member institutions on a statewide level. This annual event takes place during the spring semester.

Our requirements are that the award be personalized, but not necessarily unique to each honoree (i.e. prints of the same painting are perfectly acceptable). The award should be locally produced. The award should be created with sustainable materials where possible. The award should reflect the values of Utah Campus Compact and should not be considered offensive by the general public.

Our event is April 2, 2012 and our budget is between $15-$20 per finished award. This includes frames and personalization plates if necessary. We will need between 40-60 awards.
Artists may propose their own budget for how this money is used.

Proposals will be accepted until January 13^th.

Submissions will be critiqued January 16-20^th with a decision made by January 23^rd.

Artist will have from January 24^th to March 27^th to complete the awards.

Names of honorees are finalized on March 5^th.

Awards must be at our office by March 26^th.

The artist will be invited to attend the recognition luncheon on April 2, 2012.

To almost everyone I know on the planet,
(I know you're all busy, but please read to the end... I'll be eternally grateful)

Early Friday morning, I opened an email to the news that IPL has lost its biggest donor. $20,000 just walked out the door. Apparently, our highly successful first fundraiser in November had the opposite effect than intended... instead of demonstrating that our work with the community was an investment worth continuing to support, representatives from this foundation concluded their donation was no longer needed.

Since our yearly operating expenses are just under $70,000 a year, this is a big hit for us to put it mildly. I have to act fast, because this money was something we counted on in the first quarter of the year for the last several years.

I've decided to scratch the pitch about telling you to give me all your money, since that could land me in jail, so... the deadline for making donations for year-end tax purposes is approaching... anybody out there still need a tax deduction? Anybody out there still have a few bucks to spare... damn, I'm going to dispense with the niceties and just say it, "Hey buddy, can you spare a dime?"

I totally, TOTALLY understand if this is too much to ask, especially given that I just got finished asking essentially the same thing barely a month ago. And since everybody's probably close to being tapped out (if you aren't tapped out already with the holidays staring you in the face), I won't hold it against you if you can't help us out, or if you want to send a threatening letter in the mail (see address below).

Swallowing one's pride is a prime requisite for running a non-profit and after a weekend of racking my brain, this last swallow is giving me a real stomachache; but this is a sink or swim moment for IPL, and the idea of having to teach our students what "out of business" means, is just too much to bear.

I wish I had something to promise you guys in return, like a challenge grant to double whatever you might be able to give, but those things take time to cultivate. However, I'm always investigating new funding sources, and although it's a long shot even in the best of times, convincing one of them that IPL is significantly important to the lives of enough people, may bring them on board. I do know for a fact, that the number of individuals seen as contributing to a cause can be every bit as significant to a potential donor as the amount actually raised by that number of people.

We have another grant anticipated in the fall and a limited amount of reserves from a couple other sources. If you can respond to this plea in whatever way your current situation allows, no matter how small... and if we can pull in another 8-10 thousand dollars to go with the $10,000 in profits from our English is Crazy fundraiser, we can survive til that other grant comes in.

Environmental Education Internship – Spring 2012 Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter, Park City, UT

Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter is a 1,200 acre nature preserve located in Park City, UT. It includes 800 acres of wetland habitat, 400 acres of upland habitat, and a 10,000 square foot Platinum LEED certified “green” visitor’s center. The mission of Swaner is to preserve the land, educate the community about the value of nature, and nurture both the ecosystem and the human connection to the ecosystem. Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter is part of Utah State University.
Swaner offers a wide range of education programs for youth and adults. A monthly series of adult programs offers everything from lectures on water quality, aspen health, and sandhill cranes to cooking classes and moonlight snowshoe tours. Youth programs at the Preserve are run by USU Extension and focus on science and environmental education. Programs include school field trips, summer camps, teen environmental science and leadership clubs, and monthly education programs. The goal of the Preserve’s youth education program is to get youth outside, learning about their local environment, and developing a sense of appreciation for and responsibility towards our environment.
The Preserve also has a very active Volunteer Program and Land and Conservation Program. Projects are currently being conducted to stabilize stream banks on the preserve, restore wetland habitat and function, monitor water quality, and manage invasive weeds.
Internship Information
Utah State University Extension is offering a paid internship in environmental education at Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter in Park City for the Spring 2012 semester. Intern responsibilities will include:

Help prepare for, plan, and lead school field trips on the Preserve
Help prepare for, plan, and lead Little Naturalist programs – a reading program held twice a month at Swaner EcoCenter for children ages 3-5
Help prepare, plan, and implement monthly youth education programs
Help plan summer camp activities
Help recruit volunteers and manage Swaner volunteer program
Advertise for education programs
Help with miscellaneous educational activities – data entry/record keeping, administrative assistance, creating educational materials, etc.

The internship will pay $12.00 per hour, with a requirement of 10-15 hours per week. Work schedule is flexible and can be planned around the intern’s class schedule. Some weekend and evening work may be required. This internship will provide experience planning education programs, working with youth, and delivering environmental education. It will also expose the intern to land restoration and conservation, non-profit organizations, record keeping, marketing, and sustainable living projects.

The ability to work in a self-motivated and independent manner
Organized and detail-oriented

Peacemaking Circles- Collaborative response to domestic Violience

New York University is teaming up with the Utah Criminal JusticeCenter to conduct a research project on a domestic violence intervention calledCircles of Peace.

PeacemakingCircles:

Take a restorative justice and community-based to approach to rehabilitating offenders.
Bring together partners who have been abusive, family members, support people, a trained professional facilitator, and community volunteers (that’s you!).
Seek to encourage dialogue about the incident(s), uncover the history of violence in the particular family, and create meaningful change, and understand how violence is transmitted across generations.
Hold offenders accountable for their words and actions.

· Thecircles will take place at Intermountain Specialized Abuse Treatment Center(ISAT) in SLC, UT.

TheCommunity Volunteer:

Brings a perspective of how domestic violence affects the community as a whole
Participates in the Circle with the trained professional

Community Partner: Utah Animal Adoption Center

A warm welcome to our newest community partner, Utah Animal Adoption Center. The UACC relies completely on donations and volunteers to operate. Your support enables the UACC to continue the mission of saving healthy animals from the local shelter’s euthanasia lists. Every minute you donate to help a homeless pet helps to keep tails wagging and voices purring. You can tell in their furry faces that you make a difference.

The UACC rescues an average of1000 dogs, cats and horses each year and place them in loving new homes. UAAC has been dedicated to reducing the tragedies of pet overpopulation and theeuthanasia of healthy adoptable pets since 1983.

New volunteers are required to attend an initial orientation meeting before they may serve within the UAAC. Volunteer orientations are scheduled every Saturday at 11 am and periodically throughout the week. They ask that all volunteers commit to at least eight hours a month but feel free to come in and help every day- it's up to you!

Some of the volunteerjobs are:

Cleaning kennels andadoption areas for both dogs and cats

While temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, Salt Lake County’s Urban Farming Division is thinking about spring gardening. That’s because another new community garden will open next year, and Urban Farming Coordinator Julie Peck-Dabling needs to determine where.

“Salt Lake County has been expanding our community garden efforts as we continue to see more and more support for local homegrown foods,” said Peck-Dabling. “There are many possible new garden locations, so it’s important that we prepare now for when it’s time to start planting.”

Stress Busting 101

Lifehacker, quite possibly my favorite blog on the web just posted a really informative article on stress. It is short and to the point, and while I doubt I can write it better here is the jist:

Recognize the impacts that stress is having on your life. Is it acute (momentary panic attack) or chronic (not going away any time soon) Acute is easier to define and situation dependent, chronic may be a little hard to get to the root cause. Once you define your stress it will be much easier to resolve. Chances are you have a few of both.
MEDITATE!- Its not just for hippies anymore. Meditation can be whatever you want if it is relaxing and solitary. A walk, a park bench, a favorite art gallery, anything that you can passively engage in and allow your mind to work out its own kinks. Never underestimate the power of your own mind. Find those activities that help you find peace. You don't have to make funny sounds to mediate, you just have to relax.
Exercise. Regularly. I recognize a drastic change in my mood and overall happiness when I start slacking on my work outs. Its easy to fall out, and getting back in to the exercise groove can be extremely challenging but I know that when I find my rhythm it is when I have a good balance exercise in my weekly routine.
Identify that person or people that are causing you stress and make as much space between you and them as possible. Whether it is your boss, your coworker or your roommate, limit and regulate your interactions as much as possible. Use other people as a go between if you can.
Make a plan. Identify what is important to you, what is meaningless to you and create a program with specific steps to get you where you want to be. Already pretty happy? Set your sights a little higher. Remember that study I found a while back that said people with higher dreams and aspirations tend to be happier.
Donate the cause of your worries. If money is consistently causing you stress, try donating to a charity. I struggled with this at first. The thought if giving away money in my already stressed budget seemed like it would just make things worse. But then I thought of the time I donated my entire birthday check to my local community radio station, and how good that made me feel. Its a way of taking control over money, rather than being controlled by it.
Schedule your stress. This one made me laugh. I am currently experimenting with hyper scheduling my work week. Literally specific times to check emails, return phone calls, write blogs, and even scheduling time to schedule. Why not put a "FREAK OUT" block in there where I can just concentrate all that stress in to one time and be done with it. Its a way of recognizing that you can never get rid of all of your stress, so you might as well take it head on.

Community Partner: Ingles Para Latinos

Ingles Para Latinos offers flexible scheduling and one week tuition to allow students with demanding schedules the chance to learn or improve English skills. Students learn at their own rate through repeated exposure and practice. Ingles Para Latinos has a number of volunteer opportunities available:

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECT (2 - 4 hrs/wk)
Volunteers are needed to visit local Latino businesses and organizations that serve Latino and other immigrant populations in general to chat about the program while getting permission to leave flyers, and answer questions if needed. Orientation provided, some Spanish skills required.

THE ENGLISH CONVERSATION CLUB (2 - 8 hrs/week)
We have a conversation club for learners of all language backgrounds. We need lots of volunteers to man tables where students can participate in varying degrees of spontaneous conversation. Students and volunteers play games, utilize magazines and newspapers to encourage conversation, or sometimes just sit and talk about what strikes their fancy. The only requirements of the volunteers are good listening skills, the ability to speak SLOWLY and CLEARLY, patience and a sense of humor. No foreign language skills are necessary since only English is permitted. Bring your own conversation starters if you wish!

FUNDAMENTALS ASSISTANT / READING COACH (2 - 4 hrs/week)
As a Fundamentals Assistant and/or Reading Coach, at least basic Spanish skills are required as you will primarily help students to complete worksheets and/or assist them in reading and understanding books from our online library.
Times available are 6:30-8:30 Tuesday nights, and noon -1:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Nighttime is usually one job or the other, daytime may include both. Orientation provided.

STUDY BUDDY (2 - 8 hrs/wk)
Practice your Spanish working one on one with students who need extra help with the basics. Volunteers are given materials to use during their sessions with students, and orientation is provided.
Times are Wednesday and Thursday 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday noon to - 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and/or 1p.m.-2:30p.m.

COMPUTER LAB PROCTOR (2 - 4 hrs/wk)
Inglés Para Latinos offers Computer English classes on Rosetta Stone Version 3, an older but very user friendly language acquisition program.
Times are Mondays thru Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 10:30a.m.-12:30p.m. and/or 1p.m.-2:30p.m. There is no English instruction required from the volunteer, but basic Spanish skills are helpful. Students from other language backgrounds also participate in this class. Volunteers often work in pairs for the first 30 to 45 minutes, then one volunteer may be asked to work in another area.
Because many of our new students have never touched a computer or mouse before, volunteers help them learn basic computer skills, to log on and use the system, make sure they don't end up in lessons too difficult for their current ability level, and help them learn how to maintain their progress records. Orientation and training is provided on the job.

Test Administrator (during IPL class times, to be arranged)Volunteers are needed to help administer the Basic English Skills Test (B.E.S.T.) literacy exams. This involves orienting students before they take the test, giving the test (1 hour time limit, booklet form), correcting the exams (very easy, just follow manual provided) and going over results with individual students. Spanish skills required. Orientation provided.

English is Crazy! Fundraising Event (to be arranged)Volunteers are needed to help us with our first every fundraising event in November of 2011. Currently we need help with obtaining items and setting up our silent auction, but if you're interested and would like to help with other areas or the night of the event, visit the site and click on the English is Crazy button.

GRANT WRITER/RESEARCHER (2 - 4 hrs/wk)
Inglés Para Latinos is looking for someone interested in grant writing and researching funding possibilities. SLCC Participates in nationwide "Remembrance Day National Roll Call"

On Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2011, Salt Lake Community Collegewill join a nationwide grassroots effort— the ‘Remembrance Day National Roll Call.’ This program serves to honor American service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan since the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

We are asking for volunteers from the College community to read the names of the 6,200+ casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn. The reading of the names is expected to take nine hours to complete as readers announce each name in chronological order. We are requesting 35 volunteers to participate by reading approximately 180 names in 15 minute time slots.

The ceremony will begin at 8:00am MST with a Flag Raising at the Flag Poles of the Taylorsville Redwood Student Center, South City Campus, and Jordan Campus concurrently. The West High School JROTC Navy Cadets will present the Colors. At 8:30am MST the roll call will begin in the Taylorsville Redwood Student Event Center. At 12:00pm MST we will join colleges across the country and observe a simultaneous nationwide minute of silence.

VITA is an IRS program implemented through the statewide Earn It. Keep It. Save It. campaign by local community coalitions and non profits that provide free tax preparation services to low-income households. Volunteers work with tax filers to ensure that the tax filer receives all of the credits to which they are entitled, including the EITC. Volunteers serve as greeters, translators, tax preparers, site coordinators, or as financial resources specialists. IRS approved training and certification leads to volunteer confidence and the ability to prepare an accurate return, where the client ultimately receives all the tax credits they qualify for. Host agencies provide site management, on-going volunteer support, and often offer additional services (referral information) that help clients improve their financial stability.

Community Partner: Utah Cultural Celebration Center

Admittedly, I was not really familiar with the Utah Cultural Celebration Center before visiting last week. In the first five minutes, I was excited at the potential in the UCCC as a community partner. I was amazed at the range of activities going on in any given month: Dance classes nearly every night from several different countries around the world, elementary school art classes and presentations from well-known artists, rotating art exhibits, and conferences of all kinds.

Currently, the UCCC could use some students in a few different areas:

Someone with some video/technical skill to help digitizing the video collection
An organized, self-motivated student to help recreate a contact database

There are also some upcoming events that could use some volunteers:

ARTrageous Tuesdays are programs for school groups that include a guided exhibit tour or live performance from an artist followed by hands on, participatory art making or cultural experience. School groups of about 30 students with teachers spend 90 minutes – 2 hours at the UCCC and can reserve a spot from 9am-5pm.

OCT 24 & 27 ARTrageous program on Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
Dia de los Muertos is a traditional holiday in Mexico that honors loved ones who have passed away and celebrates the continuity of life. Students will take a look at colorful folk art objects and discuss significance. The hands on piece will include sugar skull painting, paper flower making and dancing. There is also a video presentation if time allows

Silent Witness Reflections

Recently, SLICE: Student Leaders in Civic Engagement members presented the Silent Witness display onthe Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The display is simple silhouettes of various people, somefamilies, babies, and individuals. Each cutout displayed a story. The story of a person who died as a result of domestic violence.

I personally felt the display was subtly powerful. Thesefigures represent people taken from world by loved ones, an act thatcontradicts every notion of the word love. The outlines merely shadows of whatcould have been a long life.

It was interesting to me to see people’s reaction to thedisplay. Some walked past indifferent,quickly reading the information sign but not taking three minutes to walkthrough and read the stories. However, many were quite moved by the display- somoved that they left personal messages on the board. The reflections are listedbelow.

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to get to know and help a generation of veterans who have made great sacrifices in the name of freedom, country and community. You'll have the opportunity to participate in scheduled activities, go on community activities, or just build a relationship with one veteran in individual meetings

You'll need to be reliable and be able to set somewhat of a consistent schedule. The USVNH also needs a 25 hour minimum commitment.

I got the chance to take a tour and meet with a few of the residents earlier this week. Its a very welcoming and positive atmosphere. Even in my short interactions, I could tell how happy it makes the residents to have visitors. I'm certain that spending a more substantial amount of time would be rewarding and prove to be extremely meaningful.

A new study out of the University of California-Riverside says "People who set themselves ambitious goals tend to be more satisfied than those with lower expectations" according to an article from Inc.com

The article takes a look at goals in terms of "Expectancy" vs. "Value". As volunteers, I think it is safe to say that we generally set goals of high value. How many of us are willing to sacrifice the notion of accomplishing a goal (ending poverty, stopping global climate change, equal rights for all human beings...) for the sake of contributing to something in which we believe?

Aspen is an iconic tree in the Rocky Mountain West. Fluttering leaves and golden fall foilage make this species a natural standout on the hillsides of Park City. Lichens growing on trees are much less well known, but play a strong role in nature's web. Join Swaner EcoCenter and Paul Rogers, director of the Western Aspen Alliance, as we develop an appreciation for aspens and lichens and learn to see the dazzling display of miniature plants all around us. This presentation will explore the ecology and relationships of aspens and lichens as well as larger issues affecting western forests.

What:
The International Coastal Cleanup is an annual worldwide event orchestrated by the Ocean Conservancy. The purpose of the ICC is to remove trash and debris from the world’s beaches and waterways, identify sources of that debris, and change the behaviors that allow it to reach the ocean in the first place.
Each September, volunteers in over 150 countries join together in the world’s largest volunteer effort for Ocean Health. This year, cleanups in Utah will occur throughout the months of September and October. Cleanups are scheduled for September 10th, 17th, and 24th.
Come one, come all! Just be prepared in attire suitable for picking up trash around waterways.

AVID Program (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What:
Canyons School District seeks third- and fourth-year college students, graduate students, and college graduates to be paid tutor-mentors in the AVID program. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national college preparatory program whose mission is “to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society."

AVID tutors work with experienced teachers and are trained in the AVID tutoring method, which follows an analytical seminar model: tutors will conduct group tutorials that help middle and high school students think critically, ask probing questions, comprehend rigorous curriculum, and develop study and organizational skills. As role models and mentors for underperforming students, AVID tutors show by example that a college education is attainable.

When:
AVID is an ongoing program. For the 2011–2012 academic year, AVID tutors will work Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:50 am to 12:20 pm and/or Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:50 am to 12:20 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, tutors do not need to work the entire period; they could work 8:50– 9:40, 9:45–10:35, or 10:50–12:20. Tutors can be hired on a semester-to-semester basis. AVID tutoring may also qualify for Federal Work-study.

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the nation’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI focuses on three cornerstones of activity that offer hope, reform and health: Support, education and advocacy.

What:
NAMIWalks is our signature fundraising event that promotes: Raising awareness about mental illness, increasing community education and reaching out to new families and individuals affected by mental illness, and supporting local NAMI affiliates to build a larger NAMI community.

A 5k (3mi) walk in support of NAMI and its efforts. We are looking for volunteers for walk day to help with set up/tear down, as well as help during the walk. This includes activities such as manning water stations, supervising the children’s area, registration, and the like. Volunteers will know their assignments prior to walk day.

August 2011. Starting in Fall 2011 under served teens (ages 16-17) will partner with adults who use writing in their careers in mentoring relationships for nine months. Meeting weekly, these writing teams will work together to develop strong writing skills and abilities in all types of writing: creative, professional and academic.

Learn about poverty in our community

Who:
Community Action Partnership of Utah is the statewide association for Utah's nine Community Action Agencies. The Community Action network envisions an end to poverty in Utah. Our member agencies work toward this vision every day by providing services to low-income families and individuals across the state. CAP Utah advocates for, supports, and provides training and technical assistance to Utah's Community Action Agencies, utilizing our collective strength to address the causes of poverty.

What:
During the Community Action Poverty Simulation participants role-play the lives of low-income families for four 15 -minute "weeks," which is designed to sensitize participants and create a broader awareness of the realities of poverty. Volunteers will role-play the community resources that participants will utilize during their "month" in poverty including the local grocer, bank teller, social worker, etc. No preparation is needed for volunteers.

When:
The Community Action Poverty Simulation will be Tuesday, May 24th 2011. There will be a thirty-minute volunteer orientation at 2:00 then the simulation begins at 2:30 and goes until 4:00. Volunteers would need to dedicate the full two hours. Volunteers are encouraged to attend the debriefing and Call to Action following the simulation, but not required.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter. Mission: “We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS."

What:
Volunteer for Bike MS! Bike MS Utah is June 25-26 in Logan, and we need hundreds of volunteers to help! Volunteer before or during the event to stuff rider packets, check in participants, feed bikers, answer questions, distribute prizes, cheer on participants, and much more!

When:
250 volunteers are needed for various shifts from June 24-26. Volunteers can volunteer for one or multiple days and stay in USU housing upon availability. Meals, breaks, and fun are included! We also need volunteers pre-event June 6-10 at our office in Salt Lake to help stuff rider packets.

Good Shepherd Homecare & Hospice believes that through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring attitude, patients can recuperate from their surgery, illness, or injury. Our goal and mission is to provide exceptional homecare and hospice services through a team of health care specialists to improve the quality of life for those in our care.

What:

Good Shepherd Hospice needs a volunteer to support an elderly couple that live in a care facility. The husband is providing care to his wife, who has Alzheimer's. He would enjoy someone with whom to play chess, to talk with, to work on jig saw puzzles, or light activities. They live in the Sandy area.

When:

The project will begin after a volunteer has completed 12 hrs of training. This training is required by Utah state law because of the vulnerability of the elderly. Content of the training is standardized, but volunteers are given material enabling them to proceed in a self-directed manner.

Where:

Confidentiality requirements of the Federal government (HIPPA) does not allow us to say more than that the couple seeking assistance lives in Sandy.

What? Purpose: Women Build is Habitat's volunteer pgoram for women who want to learn construciton skills, home improvement and make a difference by building homes and communities. Women Build Brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. What? FREE! MANA is a sacred Polynesian word that is shared amongst the various Pacific Island nations and people. True definition is difficult to translate to English but generally it has many meanings such as Strength, Person (or group/organization) with Great Prestige or Character, Influence, Authority, Efficacy or Sacred to name a few.

This is the second annual MANA event held at SLCC. It is a gathering of Pacific Islanders and all who wish to learn about Pacific Islander issues and/or way of life and how we as a group can make life better, not only for ourselves, but for each other. Health, Identity/Self Awareness, Matching Skills to Careers, Respect and other Cultural aspects will be discussed and shared on these and various other topics. Food will be served and entertainment will be after the Gathering proceedings.
