Many of which were mainly related to the Sandy City Police Explorers, and America Reads. April was the last month of tutoring for me at Nibley Park Elementary, at least for the spring 2014 semester. Although tutoring children in reading is challenging, it is well worth every moment and struggle. The benefits of knowing how to properly read are astronomical. I also officially started volunteering in the Sandy City Police crime lab this month. I am enjoying this immensely. I am looking forward to learning more while volunteering with the Sandy city Explorers.

H.K.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-40660680331279806482014-06-29T12:16:06.420-07:002014-06-29T12:16:06.420-07:00I forgot I also did my regular volunteer work for ...I forgot I also did my regular volunteer work for SL County Animal Services. I actually have applied for a position with them and really hope to be hired! Since I was very young I have loved to help animals. I believe the issues animals face are community issues and in order for the lives of animals to improve we have to make that change happen. The most rewarding experience of the kitten nursery is helping little orphans survive. The most challenging for me is knowing how much education there needs to be about spaying and neutering your pets. For all those cute adorable kittens that go up for adoption that is one less older cat who gets adopted. and how many of those adorable kittens will wind up back in our shelters? This volunteer work feeds my initial goal with schooling to eventually become the director of a shelter.~Jessica VigosAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-29838977984898702452014-04-30T14:43:06.393-07:002014-04-30T14:43:06.393-07:00I've been volunteering at the Maliheh free cli...I've been volunteering at the Maliheh free clinic for the last little while. I think that my most rewarding experience would be to see the appreciation the patients have for all the care they are given. They are all so nice and so grateful for what the clinic does for them. My most challenging experience would probably be the language barrier. A lot of the patients speak different languages other than English. Most speak Spanish but some even speak other languages. I have been able to learn most words that should be able to get me through what I need to do, but it still isn't enough. I want so badly to be able to communicate effectively with them, but it is very difficult. It's crazy that such a small thing can change so much. I haven't really learned anything like this in any of my classes this semester.Kori Nelsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14959372865585857493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-68513395493368804042014-04-29T22:23:02.071-07:002014-04-29T22:23:02.071-07:00Well, as embarrassing as it is I was hospitalized ...Well, as embarrassing as it is I was hospitalized for almost the entire month of April due to some postpartum anxiety and mental instability that I had been struggling with now I am way behind in life and do not know exactly if I can catch up back to the place where I was. Thank goodness most of my classes are going to be allowing me an incomplete and some more time to get everything done. I am so grateful to all of my teachers who have been so understanding and helpful. Currently, I am trying to readjust and take things at a steady pace. We will see what the end of the semester and the beginning of May bring but I have not been able to do any volunteer work and I feel awful although I do have plans to continue doing volunteer work in the summer months.
LSHAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-36579208485846022312014-04-29T14:01:12.238-07:002014-04-29T14:01:12.238-07:00I have had way more time to volunteer with the stu...I have had way more time to volunteer with the students lately, it's been great. With the America Reads program, I've been having the opportunity to know kids from age 6-10 and oh man they are difficult. It has been a lot of fun. I have enjoyed working with the cats there and finally decided to get to know the dogs. I loved walking them around the block and enjoying the sunshine. I am also on their lead volunteer committee so right now we are getting ready for the NKUT Adoption Weekend. We are taking volunteers right now and there are many shifts and positions available! It is really exciting being a part of the new NKUT (No-Kill Utah) initiative to end the killing of adoptable dogs and cats in Utah. The goal is to get Utah to be the first No-Kill state for animals by 2019!! Now that truly is a goal so celebrate.

Here is the information for anyone that wants to volunteer for the NKUT Adoption Weekend. Or if you just want to volunteer at their adoption center you can do that on this site as well! As a part of this event, we held a backpack logo design contest that was open to any young adult under the age of 26 who wants to break down the stigma surrounding mental health.
This monday was the final date for submissions and we have already selected a winner for the contest. We had quite a few people submit a drawings and they were all amazing. I love to hear people's personal stories of resilience with mental health and see people come together to create a community based solution and support each other.

I think this will be a really worthwhile event, I know the money raised from the bowling tournament will benefit the Youth Advisory Board which is a cause I believe in whole heartedly. I started learning some new signs in order to do everything correctly. I was also paired with a deaf mentor so that she could watch me and help if I got stuck or forgot something. It was wonderful and she was so positive. Anytime I looked at her for a hint at what I forgot she was right there to help me. By the end I almost had everything down, only needing a couple prompts. She kept telling me what a great job I had done and she was so happy I was there to serve. I was not prepared when I began attending classes for the dramatic change and personal growth that has taken place in me. It is amazing that at my age I changed at all. When i think back to who I was when I first started classes to who I am today I am proud to know me. I am also a little sad. I will never have the same amazing opportunity for personal growth again like I have had at SLCC. This doesn't mean I will stop growing as a person it just means that the environment here is an awesome place to really learn about the world and the amazing people in it.
