Through the SLSS course and what I’ve experienced firsthand, I now know things that others don’t and I share what I’ve learned every day. I am only one person and I know that I can make a difference but not as much of difference if I keep this information to myself.

Reaching out to adults and friends on social media, working with children that I mentor and volunteer with, all human beings can learn and change and so I ensure that I feed them this knowledge that I am fortunate enough to have received. As cliché as it is, “knowledge is power” and the more I learn the more I want to change so I can only imagine that it’s the same for others.

I am also gaining experience and understand of how I can aid in the change by sifting through what is out there, from the community partner side, and getting a feel for what help is truly needed. I feel as if I am becoming more and more aware of the needs and real issues, and because of this I am more equip to share and help the communities grow.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12792157092561654677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-75949958237327027842016-04-09T08:45:16.536-07:002016-04-09T08:45:16.536-07:00Becoming a part of CES at SLCC has empowered me in...Becoming a part of CES at SLCC has empowered me in many ways. I have become more aware of the needs of the community around me and I now know how to an advocate to my community. Because I have worked with multiple community partners, I have become more well-rounded and creative in the ways I help out. CES helped me apply these principles by the basic requirements of the service learning based courses, requiring participation in a certain amount of service hours, and requiring participation in cohort meetings.
As a leader in CES and volunteering, I have helped out my community by volunteering through the Special Olympics of Utah, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Utah Aids Foundation, and the Cancer Wellness House. I feel that becoming so diverse in my volunteer work, I have helped out many individuals in my community. I have worked with each of my partners to demonstrate how enlightening service work is and how it all is needed throughout every community. I am working in the community to be an example to show that hard work and service impacts others lives and our own. I also want to show that being a good example is enlightening and really helps yourself and others learn. As we work in the community and with those around us, we are sparking, growing and strengthening relationships. As a student, it is also encouraging for the staff and faculty that we are surrounded by because we influence them with the work that we do. As a CES leader I am always striving to become a better person than I was yesterday and I want to make a difference in the lives of others and in this world. The Thayne Center has laid the foundation for students to have the opportunity to be engaged with our community and to seek out to make a difference. To help with the mission statement of the Thayne Center I made my goal to help as much as I can plus a little more. I have been teaching, and organizing events, and going out of my way to inform a larger scale of people with my position as president of the student nurse association. I need to do my part and help others to do theirs. I feel that I help fulfill the Thayne Center mission by being aware of the things around me and informing others of ways they can make a positive change. I know that my help in the office has a significant impact on the students of SLCC as well as the non-profits we work with and those that they serve. When I add community partners to Orgsync. When I advertise us outside of the school.

I've been so lucky to work really closely with the Center and get a good taste for the ethic. I love that I've been readily accepted into the team and had a chance to contribute and learn. I've done my best to contribute in the ways that the mission statement outlines. All of the CES are doing wonderful things in our community that speak volumes about the college. Being part of many students clubs, slccsa and volunteering in the community it has helped me to develop my leadership skills and also to get out of my comfort zone. By applying those changes I have the ability to influence those who I work with whether it is in school or out of school in the community which help me grow further within my beliefs and goals. Being involved with the Thayne Center has given me the knowledge of the importance of giving back to my community and also to develop my self-worth. Having this further understanding, I believe, helps me to see the bigger picture in what I do as America Reads assistant and a CES.
I recently attended a TCCAAB meeting, where the goals and purposes of the Thayne center were being discussed. This reinforced my belief that being involved with the Thayne Center is beneficial to my interests and my community. It also helped me to see it can be expanded or continued as I move on to another institution, through the experience I have had by being involved with CES and the Thayne center.chanelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13650990573743029496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-2788392170871457812016-03-03T10:37:04.574-08:002016-03-03T10:37:04.574-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.chanelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13650990573743029496noreply@blogger.com
