My bad on my part wish I could go back and do more :/ however, I did do some work in the DRC at the beginning of the month like the first few weeks but I didn't keep track of the times I went in. So I didn't mark them down on hours.

Blue Bird Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-40317330298625296432014-02-04T11:13:57.995-08:002014-02-04T11:13:57.995-08:00In December I was able to volunteer at the Maliheh...In December I was able to volunteer at the Maliheh Free Clinic. Like always, I had so much fun helping around the clinic. I enjoyed meeting new people and I also had a woman teaching me Spanish, while I was teaching her how to speak English. It was great being able to use problem-solving skills while I was there. I did have a lot going on around the holidays, so I was able to volunteer twice through the month of December.Alexa Corseynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-56405916097066356462014-02-03T15:28:02.702-08:002014-02-03T15:28:02.702-08:00In December I was able to participate in a lot of ...In December I was able to participate in a lot of service for people who were homeless and facing poverty. My favorite service activity I participated in was a holiday luncheon with NAMI. NAMI hosts a free lunch every year for individuals living with mental illnesses in the community. A lot of the time people who suffer from chronic mental illnesses have a hard time obtaining and maintaining jobs or they are on disability because their illness is too serious for them to work. This is such a great service opportunity because it is a population that is often overlooked. A lot of the people who came live in extreme poverty. A part of this luncheon was helping NAMI to get a lot of donations for gifts and a traditional holiday meal. I attended the luncheon and got the chance to sit and socialize with the families who came and I felt nothing but their gratitude fill the room. It was such a great experience to hear about people's strengths, hopes, and plans for the future. Often, these illnesses do not inspire hope for the future and so the atmosphere was so uplifting and hopeful for everyone. The place I normally volunteer with the Deaf community was closed for the holidays. The Deaf Center only had a couple opportunities and they were at times I couldn't go. But next month I should be able to do a lot more and I'm excited.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-39197893009029501852013-12-30T18:58:34.852-08:002013-12-30T18:58:34.852-08:00This month I started volunteering with the Hope Al...This month I started volunteering with the Hope Alliance by cleaning prescription glasses for their trip to Peru. It's been great knowing I'm making a difference and helping out a wonderful cause. It's also been great getting to know the other volunteers and employees and learning what it takes to run a business. They even invited me to go on an expedition! I hope to continue exploring other volunteer opportunities in the next year.

- AliAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-39041818484573390772013-12-21T17:17:48.505-08:002013-12-21T17:17:48.505-08:00I am a volunteer for Salt Lake County Animal Servi...I am a volunteer for Salt Lake County Animal Services. I have been involved with animals for many years but I have to say helping the animals in my own community has been extremely rewarding in my life and the lives of the shelter animals. I did several of my papers an aspects of animal advocacy, change and volunteering. I hope anyone who reads this will consider volunteering at your local shelter. They really need cat volunteers, they are tons of people advocating and fighting for dogs, which is awesome but the kitties are the most euthanized animal in the world. In order to change this it takes community envolvement, TNR programs and people actaully caring about animals. Please this winter season if you see cats, dogs or any other animal starving, freezing-HELP THEM! Salt Lake County Animal Services is no-kill, they do not euthanize for space and cover a very large area. We are alos fortunate to have strong ties with Best Friends. They are all doing amazing work but cant do it alone! The old way of rounding up animals and putting them to sleep at taxpayers expense is outdated and ineffective. Please if you can volunteer, speak up for animal, get them inside in freezing temps, report abuse, provide an outside shelter for a community cat DO IT! You will never know how much of an impact you will have until you try! So please this Holiday make a donation to your local shelter, do something to help them. We are their voice! Unfortunately, this is my final week of tutoring this month, but I will be able to start tutoring again in January. It has been a truly amazing experience to see how much these children I have been tutoring have grown. Most them have advanced three to four reading levels. One them jumped up five levels, which was amazing! It seems like every semester I tutor I learn new ways to tutor, and different ways to connect with the children. Although this semester had its difficulties, it was well worth it in the end to see such great advancement in these children's reading levels, and in myself as a leader. I am looking forward to learning how to be an even better tutor next semester! I In my LE 2920 class I learned how to be a change agent/leader. By being an America Reads tutor, I am doing just that. I have learned so much through this class, including how to be a better America Reads tutor.

H.K.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-9438219686166116452013-12-04T15:36:05.080-08:002013-12-04T15:36:05.080-08:00This month, I have still been volunteering at Guad...This month, I have still been volunteering at Guadalupe school but they will be closing for the Holiday season and resume classes in the second week of January!
During this break, I am cutting and tying fleece quilts to donate to the Unified Police Station! The police station accepts things for children and people in accidents to hold onto as comfort when there is an accident or even just to keep others warm! It will be a good month!
