The skills that I can contribute to my work as a Civically Engaged Scholar is dedication to finish tasks and loads of hard work. My biggest challenge in the program I think will be trying to get all the service hours I need just because the Food Bank gets lots of volunteers around the holidays. I do not have any particular skills that are very pertinent to the organization. Other than perhaps being somewhat knowledgeable about infection control and disease prevention. Also I am a capable learner so I suppose that is a good skill no matter where you are. My most valuable skill has probably been fast reflexes because sometimes a nice petting can turn into a nice slashing haha. My most difficult problem is definitely the social aspects. I find it very challenging to go and get out there. However, that is what I am most excited about. There is so much room to grow and improve myself which is one of the big reasons I decided on this path. They are not just giving to those in need they are educating them and advocating to increase access to food sources. Working with policymakers to ensure the choices made are a benefit to those in need. I was able to participate with the Fall Alternative break which focus was hunger in Utah. We worked with three different organization whose focus in food sources. Being able to see first hand the challenges they have and the great resources they have was an eye opening. This has helped me understand the process of utilizing the resources but as well as the need of more awareness. The guidance of CES program is providing me to learn more of the needs in many different aspects in peoples lives. My challenge is time, but also choosing one organization and being able to fully commit. I want to work with a different organization each semester. I want to get my feet wet in all different organizations to help as much and many people as I can. I am excited that there is an endless opportunities to work with such a variety of community partners. Being able to make connections and learn so much from each non-profit. And as well is meeting and working with other college students and that the program feel that it's age based.Lenora Monge-Ramireznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-76534803154363120902015-11-05T09:19:40.780-08:002015-11-05T09:19:40.780-08:00I am working with the Neighborhood House Child Car...I am working with the Neighborhood House Child Care Center in one of the 4 year olds classroom. Their mission is to provide a “fun, safe and loving environment at our Salt Lake daycare center where children receive the educational and developmental opportunities needed for a healthy start in life.”
I don’t have much experience working with children however I do feel extremely comfortable around them, which is something I know they can pick up on. I treat them as if they are people and I communicate with them on their level so I create relationships with the children. The more I get to know the children in the community the more insight I will have to better the community for them and future children.
My biggest challenge right now is just making time for everything. I think I took a little too much on this semester and so I don’t feel that I am as committed as I truly want to be. As for the program, I have only been able to work with them a few times so I am just getting familiar with it all. I love the children, the staff and the facility are amazing so I’m not sure what the challenges could even be but I will keep you posted.
· With the program I am most excited about working with these amazing kids! They are all so funny and inviting and actually remembered me after just one visit. I love reading to them and asking them questions. I have always wanted to pick up Spanish and most of the children speak Spanish so maybe I’ll be able to learn a thing or two from them. Another thing I am excited about is working with one child in particular. This child is extremely distant and doesn’t seem to like authority so I am looking forward to seeing the journey that our relationship takes; hopefully we will become friends!
Overall, I am already getting a glimpse into a different side of childcare that I have not yet experienced or been exposed to. I love the concept behind it all and am really looking forward to learning more about it and getting to know the kids.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12792157092561654677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-84095385934215069972015-11-05T09:17:55.099-08:002015-11-05T09:17:55.099-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12792157092561654677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7439019031384671619.post-15133707005722905442015-10-28T13:27:42.117-07:002015-10-28T13:27:42.117-07:00I have learned that my community partner, the Amer...I have learned that my community partner, the America Reads program here at SLCC, is about helping students to use their work study or volunteering hours to make a difference in the lives of elementary-aged children through reading and literacy activities. I volunteer at the program due to the fact it helps them gain funding for more children to be able to attend. I feel that the program has so much to offer the children learning so many skills before they are in school. I love being able to see the children grow and be able to teach me different things. I feel that we both learn something all the time and it's the best feeling knowing that I can help more children be able to attend school. The teachers are very good to me and will allow me to do things at home for them to be able to help get more activities done for the children to do while they are there and at home. So far I have learned that they really focus on helping these students succeed and getting taught with the best material. The focus is specifically on the students and helping them succeed but I am still waiting to officially start and I am looking forward to what they really have to offer. I am looking forward to teaching and learning with the students and being apart of their growing and learning experiences. Kids have the incredible capacity to be influenced by the love and support they experience at their stage in life. Being able to support them in succeeding in a life long skill such as reading is amazing. Someday in the future, a person will look back on their childhood memories and maybe an America Reads tutor at the YMCA will be one of their fondest. As a Civically Engaged Scholar, we have the potential to make positive changes. As small as we might feel we are and how much we do, our impact on the world as one person and as a community is much larger than we realize. Being a Civically Engaged Scholar, I bring a willingness to learn, understand, and improve. I'm a naturally inclined problem solver constantly looking for better solutions. When I am committed into something I feel strongly about, I give nothing but my absolute 110%. The biggest challenge I foresee is the possibility in burning myself out. I have the tendency to run my tank on Empty until I go "ka-put". Being more aware of that now, I am ready to overcome that obstacle. I am so excited to get out there and learn about life and everyone in it. And to just DO.
