UMOCA

Greetings Volunteers and Interns!
Where is the snow?! I hope it starts snowing again and you all have a chance to play outside. If the cold is not for you I hope you have a chance to come see UMOCA’s two newest exhibitions! As always if you volunteer twice this month you will be entered into a drawing to receive fantastic prizes including prints by local artist Patric Bates, limited edition books, and tickets to local attractions including Red Butte Garden, The Leonardo, and The Utah Museum of Natural History.

Special Events
If you would like to sign up for any of these events, please let me know and I will put you on the schedule.  Please note that for events, you are scheduled for the entire time.  If you cannot work the entire event, please choose one you can.  When the event is closer I will send you more details, and keep in mind that event times may change.  Thank you so much!  We appreciate all you do for UMOCA.

Friday, February 7th: 6:30-8:30 PM          Art Talk with Jeff Lambson
Jeff Lambson is the curator of contemporary art at the BYU Museum of Art. Prior to coming to Utah he worked at the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC for six years, where he worked on projects including the major Ana Mendieta retrospective which opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and an upcoming retrospective on Guillermo Kuitca co-organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Miami Art Museum, which will travel to the Guggenheim Bilbao. Lambson will be holding an open dialog with the audience about contemporary art, curatorial practices, and whatever else the audience has questions for him about regarding the art world.
  • Volunteers will greet visitors and direct them to the auditorium for the Art Talk. During the Art Talk volunteers will be able to participate in the conversation.
  • Please wear all black or dark colored, business casual clothing. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

Saturday, February 8th: 1:30-4:30 PM                           Family Art Saturday Make Believe Books
The do it exhibition is a compilation of do-it-yourself projects and installations instructed by renowned contemporary artists. This month’s Family Art Saturday is inspired by a selection from this set of instructions. Have you ever wanted to write your own story? Books inspire us to make believe and imagine possibilities outside the material world. Create your own bound book with a title and cover page for a story from your imagination. Complete the activity by producing your book’s own library catalogue card for our collaborative installation, and then take your booklet home to write and illustrate the entire story.

  • Volunteers will help with setup, assist with the art project, greet families, show families how to make the art project, and clean up the project afterward.
  • Wear clothes you can get messy in!

More Volunteer Opportunities

Art Truck| Thank you to all who volunteered with the Art Truck this fall!! The Art Truck will be hibernating for the winter but will return for visits in March.

Gallery Attending| Every hour we are open to the public we need Gallery Attendants to help assist in ensuring proper visitor interaction and museum safety. Gallery Attendants greet visitors, assist visitors with questions, make sure that museum rules are followed, and monitor the art work for its continued function and safety.

Gallery Cleaning| We are closed to the public on Mondays and it is the perfect time to clean the galleries.  Takes 1-2 hours to sweep and mop.

Postcard and flyer delivery| We give you postcards of the current exhibitions and a list of places to drop them off to. This is a great opportunity to visit our local businesses on your own schedule!
