Wasatch Iron Pen Literary Marathon and Ultra Marathon

Artists of the written word face off in a 24-hour writing competition.  Adult and Youth writers can participate in one of three categories (Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry) or can take on the Ultra Iron Pen challenge and write in all three!  Writers of all genres and experience levels can register for the marathon beginning on May 1, 2013 at the SLCC Community Writing Center (located at Library Square) or at www.slcc.edu/cwc.   After receiving the visual prompt on Friday, June 21writers will have exactly one day to write. Submissions due Saturday, June 22nd at 6:00pm.

June 21 & 22 (F-S), 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The Art of the Article: Magazine Writing

Ever have a great idea for a magazine article, but do not know where to start? From fillers to features, the CWC can help you write a great piece that starts you on your way as a future journalist. Join Andrea Malouf to learn techniques of interviewing and visual writing, as well as understand elements of article writing, such as the sidebar or the hook.

Sharpen Your Skills: Editing Tips for all Works

 Do you have a first draft of something, but know it still needs more work? Perhaps you don't even know where to begin with the revision. Returning to that work can be daunting. Join the CWC for an interactive workshop on how to best edit your work—from the conceptual framework to the sentence structure. Please come with your own specific questions.

Where Art Lives: The Utah Arts Festival

“This is the place!”  Come visit the CWC and participate in the “Magnetic Poetry” event, one of our many one-hour writing workshops for kids and adults, plus a variety of community readings.  Be sure to register for the CWC’s Iron Pen competition (a 24-hour writing marathon) by Friday, June 21st.  See the CWC website for a full listing of events during the festival: www.slcc.edu/cwc

From Hogwarts to Goosebumps: Week-long Speculative Fiction for Kids

Does the idea of a magic wand-waving, starship-flying vampire living in a strange new world sound exciting? Join us as we explore the unique genres of speculative fiction, including fantasy and sci-fi, and learn how to incorporate the fantastic into your writing.  For kids ages 8-12.
