Introducing: Salt Lake City Girls Write!

An exciting announcement from our friends in the
SLCC Community Writing Center:

The SLCC Community Writing Center and the Salt Lake City Library are pleased to announce an exciting new mentoring program for at-risk young women in the Salt Lake valley! We’d like to invite you to consider becoming a mentor!

This program, Salt Lake City Girls Write, pairs women who use writing in their professions with high school girls (juniors) in writing mentoring partnerships for one academic year, August 2010 through June 2011.

Mentoring teams will meet for one hour each week, exploring multiple types of writing to improve writing skills, increase confidence, and open pathways to higher education and career possibilities. All teams in the program will meet together four times during the year to share writing, find out about new writing strategies, and learn from each other.

The program will culminate in a group publication of writing from the mentoring teams, a public reading event, and individual portfolios that the girls can utilize as they move towards college and/or their careers.

Mentors will be provided with in-depth training in mentoring at-risk teenagers, writing coaching strategies and collaborative writing development. Training will take place in August 2010 before the program kickoff on Saturday, August 28, 2010!

So that we can notify mentees of their placement in the program before the current school year ends, the deadline for submitting your interest in becoming a mentor is March 31, 2010. If you will have trouble meeting that deadline, or have any other questions about the program, just contact the CWC at (801) 957-4992 or email at cwc@slcc.edu

You can make a difference in the life of a young woman. Please consider becoming a Salt Lake City Girls Write mentor today!

You can fill out the attached Interest Profile, visit our website.

Please feel free to distribute this widely to any and all women you think may be interested in becoming a SLC Girls Write mentor.
